Good question. There are a couple of reasons however I suspect the Mr. Vanek is the big one.
The Omnivore was changed this summer to reflect the value of prospects regardless of when, or if, they are promoted. You waited 6 weeks before promoting Mr. Vanek and he got 21 of his 34 pts during that time. Your Omnivore total said you should have played him but instead you played Naslund and only got 12 pts. Nine pt loss.
Similarly you didn't promote Shea Weber until week 5, in the first four weeks he got 9pts which counted towards your Omnivore baseline while you were playing Jim Vandermeer for zip pts. Another nine pt loss.
Line-up decisions can also make an impact (positive if you play someone for a hot week that wouldn't normally play and negative if your line-juggling works against you).
You have played Chris Neil as one of your tough guys since the start of the year. Good call, he has gotten you 16pts as a tg (and another 17 non-tg pts). Ont the other hand, your second tg has been a work in progress juggling between three players (Vandermeer, Guerin and Weber). You only played Guerin for tg for 2 weeks and he only got you 0.5pts during that time but had you played him straight through he would have gotten you 9.5 tg pts and 20 non-tg pts. The Omnivore says that you ought to have benched Hejduk's 18pts in favour of Guerin's 20pts and tg numbers and you wouldn't be down a further 8.25pts.
Your goaltending situation really hammered you to start as your tandem of Auld and Theodore accounted for only 8pts before you got Ward - including 3 of 6 weeks where your chosen goalie went minus! The Omnivore says that you should have simply played Theodore, sucked up the bad weeks and still be on the plus side with almost 17 pts. So far your goalies have gotten you 8pts total this season so there is another 9 pts that your Baseline says you should have that you don't. BTW, Ward has already gotten you, in three weeks, more points than your goalies got you in the 6 prior weeks combined (you're welcome).
And yes, trades can hurt. When you sent me Rolston you were able to bring up Vanek and that helped your team but Rolston is still on your Omnivore baseline (as is Vanek) and he has outscored Daniel Sedin by 6 pts since then. The Omnivore remembers Rolston's production and notes that you are not keeping pace.
So that is a quick look at why the Omnivore hates you. Two of your best players remained unpromoted for too long, your FPs have underproduced but you have continued to play them, your bad goaltending was made worse by unlucky coaching decisions and you didn't make the right tg call with your second tough-guy. Down some 35pts.
The good news is that the Omnivore changes quickly. If any of the players you acquired at the WD go nuts you can eat up this deficit in no time so take heart, the season is barely a third over and the Omnivore, as it has been changed, is one area that I think you can really improve in a short period of time.
It gets worse, I'm going to have Sakic and Vermette and Koivu younger, not to mention some of the best Ds in the league scoring against me for the rest of the year... give 'em back!
Anyway, if it's any consolation Mike, my score got better because of the recent Colorado game... otherwise I've been dragging behind everyone else in the pool, and am still way back at 11th.

Actually Richard, after last night Mike pulled ahead of you as Gonchar's 5pt night was added to your baseline.
