Week 4 Final Stats - This Time With Finalized Challenge Cup Results

Hi guys, thanks for all the kind words - they really mean a lot to me.
There were no games on Halloween so the totals should be the same but, as Bob had pointed out, I did not finalize the Challenge Cup standings or formally confirm the results. That has been done now.
Hope to have Week 5 Stats out later today. Nice to be back at "work" so I can focus on this stuff instead of what I have been focused on.

Lineups Week 6

Please post your lineups, thanks. FYI, "if" Doug can't post stats for awhile, I'm willing to do but I'll be out of town this upcoming Friday thru Monday, so will have to wait until sometime next week.

STATS THROUGH WEEK 5

Thought I'd help out while Doug is dealing with personal matters. His stats will of course over-ride mine when he is ready to continue.

Please see emailed stats I have sent everyone. I couldn't post here as it wouldn't format properly (and horrific to read!)

Congrats to the Scourge on the week's best total!

Thursday Night Stats: Vendetta Still Lead, Knights Now Bottom, Half The League Over 100pts

As many of you know, my mom has taken a bit of a turn for the worse with her cancer coming back, and as a result my stats keeping may be delayed a bit. That said, I love the distraction so don't worry about me continuing to do it - or pitching me trade offers :-) - just understand I may be a day or two behind in posting or responding to queries. Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts.

Week 4 Gets Underway With Two Teams Crossing 100 pts!

Minor adjustment to the previous week's totals. I had Collin playing Seabrook for both pts and +/- for the first two weeks (he dressed him +/-) so he is down 3 pts as a result. No impact in any of the Challenge Cup games. If anyone spots any other issues, let me know.
Trade lines are always open and particularly now as I would welcome any distractions.

Week 4 Line-ups

We all know the drill.

It really helps when it comes to getting stats out quickly (and for double checking when I may get the stats out with errors) so thanks to everyone who posts them here. Thanks again to Bob, Brian and others who repost not only their own line-ups but those of others here. It is most appreciated.

Week Three Ends With Bladerunners At The Top

Bladerunners Take Lead; Great Whites Have Great Opening Night As Week 3 Gets Underway

Week Two Stats Now With Improved Accuracy!!

Hi all. One of the disadvantages of getting the stats out earlier than ever is that some of the errors in my spreadsheets are not as obvious. I think I have it correct now but there have been a few changes.
I missed a point for a couple of players, which I have now corrected, that have no impact on the standings but I was mistakenly playing 8 defensemen for the Knights Templar for the last two weeks. This has no impact on week one, other than he was 4pts lower than we thought he was, but for week two the loss of two pts does change the outcome of his game with the Severed Heads. The Heads are now credited, correctly, with the win instead of the tie and the Knights remain winless.
I have the week three line-ups all entered now so those should be up soon.

10/13/2010

Week Two Is Underway - Stats as of Tuesday Night's Games

The Personal Vendetta leap to the top of the Predator Cup standings early in week 2 while the Barbarians drop to the basement. The Personal Vendetta are in the midst of a very high-scoring affair in game one of their home and home tilt with the Shadowmen as the Challenge Cup schedule returns from its neutral site games.
As always, let me know if you see any errors with your stats.

10/12/2010

Week One Stats

As always, please double check to see that your numbers and mine are not wildly off.
Given the ongoing issues with goalie stats they may be slightly off what you have, correctly, calculated but please let me know if you see even problems of that sort and I will do what I can to keep those correct.
No guarantee that Week 2's ongoing stats will be ready to go right away but this would be the quickest I've ever had the first stats out so, you're welcome :-)
Now, about my current 11th place standing...

You all know the drill, please post 'em in the comments section.

While you do it you can watch as the Edge's prized prospect Derek Stepan nets a hat-trick in his first NHL game and gets some love from his team mates....

The Wolves

L: Elias-NJ, Smyth-LA, Malone-TBay RFA, Brunette-Min RFA, Paajarvi-Edm P3, Wheeler-Bos P3

Rating: 2.5

Elias is no longer the ppg+ scoring machine he was earlier in his career as injuries and disease have sapped some of his zip, but he's still an adequate first line option. Smyth is steadily showing the wear and tear of all the hard miles he's put on his chassis. He could be a 50+ point guy if he can stay healthy all season, but that is a big if. Malone is a nice blend of scoring and toughness, and could easily supplant Smyth on the depth chart. Brunette is one of those guys who gets constantly overlooked because he lacks flash and plays for a vanilla team, that said, he put up 60 points last year, and the Wild haven't developed any better options at the wing yet. Paajarvi is one of the three wunderkind in Edmonton, and the one with the best chance of sticking to a top line because of his speed, and better developed game. If he starts off hot he could be promoted rapidly. Wheeler is a 6'5" 220lb enigma, capable of Rick Nash like magical stickhandling one minute and Chris Angel vanishing the next. If he could ever become the sum of his tools look-out, but the fact is he appears to have lost his toolbox.

C: Toews-Chi FP, Paveski-SJ, Peverley-Atl RFA, Giroux-Pha RFA, Backlund-Cgy P3, Berglund-StL P3, Hodgson-Vcr P3

Rating: 2.5

Toews showed in the playoffs and Olympics that he can be an all-round monster capable of over a ppg offense and smothering defense. That said, he has yet to reach those kinds of offensive heights during the regular season - and this year will be the acid-test. Pavelski also had a massive playoffs this year, and has claimed the 2nd line center role in San Jose. Is there a 60+ pt season in him? Remains to be seen. Peverley is a slick and clever pivot toiling without decent wingers in Atlanta, and should be an average 3rd liner. Giroux is the real hope for the team as his play in Philly hinted at lots of offensive upside for the sparkplug. Not inconceivable that he might displace one of the guys ahead of him and get an active role. Backlund has an enormous opportunity to prove he can be a top six forward as the Flames are seriously thin at center to start the year. He's been groomed slowly (painfully at times) but shows flashes of both speed and offensive skill that are sorely needed. Berglund has all the tools to be an impact center, but has actually regressed rather badly over the last two seasons and is quickly slipping down the depth chart. Hodgson is now the most promising pivot prospect on the team, but he is gradually recovering from a serious back injury that wiped out his last season, and he has tough competition ahead of him (Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler) for top six minutes. None of the three are likely to make a splash for the Wolves this year, and that means time is running out on all of them.

R: Alfreddson-Ott, Eriksson-Dal, Burrows-Vcr, Setoguchi-SJ RFA

Rating: 3

Alfie was once again a ppg winger for the Sens, and he'll be counted on to reproduce those results again. Eriksson found excellent chemistry with Richards in Dallas and is now a solid just sub ppg winger (70-ish) perfect for the 2nd line. Burrows had a breakout season last year in Vancouver setting career highs across the board - including PIM as he meshed with the Twins to form a lethal trio. Unfortunately he is also still injured and there is no telling when his game will get fully back on track. Setoguchi is a speedy responsible winger who suffered through a series of nagging injuries last season that cost him his spot on the top two lines. He's got lots of upside to reach the 30 goal, 60+ pt plateau again, and should be a nice fill-in till Burrows returns.

D: Phaneuf-Tor FP, Greene-NJ, White-Cgy RFA, Niskanen-Dal RFA, Ballard-Vcr RFA, Fistric-Dal RFA, Wisniewski-NYI RFA, Sutton-Ana RFA, Hedman-TBay P3, Pieterangelo-StL P3, Gilroy-NYR P2

Rating: 2.5

Phaneuf had another 'off' year, reaching only 36 pts and not showing Toronto fans the ability to take over games he flashed in his years in Calgary. So of course the Leafs made him Captain. A bounce-back season to 50+pts and 120+PIM is essential for the Wolves to be competitive this year. Greene came out of nowhere to become the NJ powerplay QB, but the flaws are obvious - like the fact he plays in NJ. Another 30-35 pt season is probably in the cards for him, but more would be exceptional. White has the offensive tools to post in the 40's, and Calgary will be counting on him to earn his next contract. Niskanen, Ballard, Fistric, Wisniewski and Sutton are all candidates to be waived in favour of one or more of the Wolves D-man prospects. Hedman is a coke-machine on skates with excellent skating and offensive ability. He's just a puppy though, and needs to grow into the dominant role he seems destined to fulfill. Sooner or later the light will go on. Pieterangelo has had a terrific year getting spot duty for StLouis and playing for the Canadians at the WJC. A big mobile rearguard he has all the tools to be a #1 defender. Still has kinks to iron out of his game (it was his pinch that cost the Canadians the 2 on 1 goal by Carlson in the gold medal game), but could easily earn a promotion if he gets regular pp time. Gilroy was a bit of a bust in NYR, as the highly sought after free-agent jumped to the Rangers with a glowing college resume only to flounder upon arrival. Still has a nice set of tools, but caution on his offensive ceiling is warranted.

G: Fleury-Pit, Niemi-SJ RFA

Rating: 3.5

Fleury only posted 74 points last year making him a marginal starting caliber goaltender for the FUNHL. In contrast Niemi had an excellent season for the Hawks, but is no splitting time in SJ with Niitymaki. He could claim the top job their, and if he does, he could also knock Fleury out of his starting role for the Wolves.

The Scourge

L: Vanek-Buf, Clowe-SJ, Kunitz-Pit RFA, VanRiemsdyk-Pha RFA, Perron-StL P3, Benn-Dal P2, Tangradi-Pit P2

Rating: 3

Vanek is a decent enough first line option when he is motivated and healthy, but he has been neither since signing his huge contract offer by the Oilers. Clowe is a nice blend of scoring and toughness who continues to improve. Kunitz has all but bombed as a complimentary winger for Crosby and Malkin, failing to be either the reliable trigger or setup man they crave. VanRiemsdyk has all the tools to be an impact forward, but his development has been at a snails pace (remember he was selected right after Patrick Kane). Perron is gradually morphing into a Martin StLouis clone, and another step forward will have him displacing someone from the active roster. Benn is also poised to take over an active roster spot, though Dallas' insistence on trying him at center may blunt that progress. Tangradi was a highly sought after prospect because of his potential to play a Kevin Stevens role on one of Pitts top lines. So far though, he has struggled to keep pace with the NHL and is back in the AHL for more seasoning.

C: Spezza-Ott FP, Datsyuk-Det, Krecji-Bos RFA, Staal,J-Pit RFA

Rating: 4.5

Spezza is still an elite playmaker, but he lacks a finisher to keep his assist totals up. A healthier season coupled with a linemate who can finish his setups and he could threaten for the Art Ross. Datsyuk is a machine who should easily reach ppg marks after stumbling last season when every Red Wing forward spent time in the infirmary. Krecji should benefit from the absence of Marc Savard, but his breakout season was in part due to having others face the top checking lines while he feasted on the weaker lines and he won't have that opportunity now. Staal seems perpetually poised to emerge from his designated role as a Selke shutdown pivot as a true #2 center capable of logging heavy minutes in all situations - we'll see when the boot comes off his busted up foot.

R: Stewart-Col, Kovalev-Ott RFA, Samuellson-Vcr, Vrbata-Phx, Hornqvist-Nsh P3, Eberle-Edm P2, Skinner-Car P1

Rating: 2

Stewart had a huge breakout season last year, but it remains to be seen whether he can even repeat that magic act, let alone improve on it. Kovalev appears more disinterested than is usual even for him, a gradual slide in his production is inevitable at his age, but his wandering focus could make it even more precipitous. Samuellsson likely had his career season as all the stars aligned for him to produce. Another 30 goal season will be unlikely for the career 3rd liner. Vrbata bounced himself to Phoenix, which as we know is merely one step away from the KHL, and he is likely to be bumped by one of the Scourge's prospects. Hornqvist broke out for a 30 goal season, but just saw his pivot jump ship to the Devils. If he can sustain the momentum from last year without Arnott around he will easily land an active roster spot. Eberle is one of the three wunderkind the Oilers are counting on. Not the fastest or biggest guy, but absolutely loaded with hockey sense, he may find himself in the mix as soon as this year - but more likely next. Skinner is a pure sniper and is on a team that lacks exactly that. A strong opening to the season could see him stick with the big team and take a run at the Calder. For now though the jury is still out.

D: Boyle-SJ, Enstrom-Atl, Timonen-Pha, Robidas-Dal RFA, Corvo-Car RFA, Boychuk-Bos RFA, Meszaros-Pha, Hickey-LA RFA, Fowler-Ana P1, Gudbranson-Fla P1

Rating: 4

Good thing its a fantasy pool roster as none of the top 4 defenseman are over 6 ft or 200lbs! Boyle will once again anchor the blue for the Scourge and be counted on for 50+ points. Enstrom could also again score 50 or so, but the Atlanta situation is not as certain to produce that much offense. Timonen suffered the same malaise that afflicted all of Philly last season and he could rebound into the mid 40's or low 50's if he can keep his powerplay spot. Robidas has been gradually used more and more as a shutdown guy, and less as a powerplay QB, expect a slight dip or even a decline in his points moving forward. Corvo in contrast is a powerplay specialist, and he should get back to the 30 point range assuming the rest of his game can stay at least mediocre. Boychuk surprised last year as the roulette wheel for Bruin d-men landed on his number. Could be a fluke, or could be more to come. Meszaros is a hard-rock defender who will likely be asked to concentrate on defense and obliterating forwards into the boards. Hickey is a slow developing prospect in LA having a hard time cracking the roster - another year in the AHL is probably in the cards. Fowler is a high flying rocket shooting D-man with gaps in his defensive game - but so far Anaheim has in the mix to start the season and he could surprise by staying on. Gudbranson is an all-round defender physically mature enough to play now - expect him to land a role but be eased into the offense gradually.

G: Lundqvist-NYR FP, Ward-Car RFA

Rating: 4.5

Lundqvist is an elite netminder amongst the best in the game. Ward is a nice, if unsteady backup who has battled injuries and inconsistency the last two years, and if he is thrust into a starting role things could unravel in a hurry.

Jackpot - Schadenfreude revisited

Michael Grabner has been claimed off waivers by the New York Islanders!
Not sure that this is the Jackpot that a claim by the Pens and time with Sid or Malkin might have been, but it sure beats Rochester.

The Florida Panthers placed Grabner on waivers with the intention of sending him to the AHL. This is an unfortunate loss for the Panthers, but it's great news for Grabner, who is now projected to start the season in the NHL. Grabner was selected with the 14th overall pick of the 2006 NHL entry draft. He had five goals and 11 points in 20 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season.

The Shadowmen

The Shadowmen

L: Sedin,D-Vcr, Franzen-Det, Versteeg-Tor RFA, Whitney, Ray-Phx RFA, Bergfors-Atl P1

Rating 3.5

Sedin gives the penumbra dwellers an elite producer to head the position off, but things get more interesting the rest of the way. Franzen is an absolute monster in the playoffs, but during the regular season his production is down a couple of notches, that and he can never stay healthy to have that 35-40 goal season he seems capable of. Versteeg is an enigma. He flashed some offensive talent in Chicago, scored some timely goals for them while playing with a lot of energy and grit, and he'll get an opportunity to fill top six minutes in Toronto - so the green light is on. That said, he's a tad undersized, and has no track record of elite production at any level and is a mild injury concern because of how he plays. Whitney is still a wizard with the puck, but lacks the high gears he used to have, and he is now clearly playing out the string in Phoenix. Bergfors was among the top scoring rookies last year, and now with Atlanta they'll be asking him to play a bigger role. He can be a decent two-way forward as evidenced by his play in NJ, but is he ready for top line minutes?

C: Carter-Pha, Ribeiro-Dal, Zajac-NJ RFA, Filppula-Det RFA, Burmistrov-Atl P1, Granlund-Min P1

Rating:3

Carter is still a potential 40 goal, ppg pivot, but he has had a lot of downtime the last couple of years, and the clock is running out on him fulfilling his full offensive potential. Ribeiro lost the top dog role to Brad Richards last year and pouted his way through the season. He's undersized and lightweight for the second line role, but he has had ppg seasons in the past so its a gamble worth taking. Zajac lacks a high end top speed, but is otherwise a very good meat-and-potatoes pivot who can do a lot of the heavy lifting for his linemates, and in Jersey he is bound to draw a very good left winger no matter which of the top three lines he commands. Filppula is a responsible two-way center with above average stickhandling, but if he crests 60 points its because Datsyuk and Zetterberg collided and put each other onto long term disability. Burmistrov and Granlund are topnotch offensive prospects who could earn long auditions, but are probably at least a year away from their rookie seasons.

R: Iginla-Cgy FP, Kane-Chi RFA, Simmonds-LA RFA, Frolik-Fla RFA, Nyqvist-Det P1, Tarasenko-StL P1, Tatar-Det P1

Rating: 4.5

Kane gives them an elite gunner to compliment the probably elite production of Iginla. Arguably the best 1-2 puch at RW in the FUNHL. Simmonds is mediocre tough guy who may chip in enough offense to keep his 3rd line role. Frolik has been slowly developing in Florida, but the supporting cast is weak even if he takes a step forward. Nyqvist and Tatar will marinate for at least another year in the Detroit system. Tarasenko has the potential to be very good - even as a rookie, but St Louis is in no hurry with their prospects anymore.

D: Rafalski-Det, Bouweemster-Cgy, Kronwall-Det, Yandle-Phx, Seidenberg-Bos RFA, Stralman-Clb RFA, Coburn-Pha RFA, Russell-Clb RFA, Smith-Det P1

Rating: 3.5

Solid top 4 featuring a mix of offense (Rafalski, Yandle), toughness (Kronwall), and upside (J-Bo). Seidenberg, Stralman, Coburn and Russell will be auditioned for the bottom pair, but all are likely planned WD cuts. Smith is on the Detroit slow-development train, so expect him to spend a year in the AHL learning the Detroit system before he plays an active role.

Goal: Luongo-Vcr FP, Niitymaki-SJ RFA, Schneider-Vcr P1

Rating 5

Bobby-Lu makes this position a real strength for the team and he'll be expected to produce at an FP level. Niitymaki is not an ideal backup given his platoon situation in SJ, but Schneider would be the fill in for Luongo in the event of injury and that locks this position up for the Shadowmen as one of the best netminding situations in the league.

Total = 19.5

Schadenfreude part deux

Meanwhile, a well-placed source has told The Post that there's little reason for optimism that the condition of Vinny Prospal's right knee will improve following his enforced two-week rest period. Indeed, we're told it would be no surprise at all should the 35-year-old require surgery that would likely end his season, if not his career

Schadenfreude

I was perusing the excellent commentary on 'Lowetide' when I ran across this entry penned by none other than our very own 'Highlander';

"Did I just read this right? Has Florida waived lw Micheal Grabner?!?

We would still have the first shot at picking him up, right?"

At which I laughed out loud! For two reasons,

1. Michael Grabner was the Highlanders top prospect pick in prospect draft, so knowing he was just waived by the talent-lite Panthers can only mean good things for Grabner's career arc, and,

2. Doug pleading for Edmonton to pick him up is almost as hilarious - I guess there are not so many struggling Oilers on the Highlanders roster that they can't use one more!

Severed Heads Poised To Win Record Fourth Predator Cup!

All three of the standard oracles - the Hockey News Ultimate Pool Guide, the Score Forecaster and McKeen's Hockey Pool Yearbook - have looked at the FunHL rosters, cast their chicken bones and made an unassailable assessment of the top dressing line-up for each team (for McKeen's last year's goalie stats were used). When the mist cleared, one clear cut champion emerged - Cam Hilton's Severed Heads.

According to the Hockey News and McKeen's, the victory came over the defending champion Bladerunners. According to the Score, the win was over the Shadowmen.

Severed Heads GM Cam Hilton reportedly attributed the predictions of dominance to a team-wide commitment to prompt drafting and an utter disregard for injury reports. "You can't simply type these names in with your nose," Hilton explained to baffled reporters. All three guides felt that the injuries to Marc Savard, Mark Streit, Chris Pronger, Oli Jokinen and Sami Salo (as well as the issues surrounding Sheldon Souray's status) would be of little consequence to the Head's eventual victory. Some commentators felt that the guides may have gone to print prior to these facts coming to light but that really goes against the direction of this article so start planning the parade route in Lethbridge as the Predator Cup is going to southern Alberta.

The guides were a little more conflicted as to who would "win" the Herbivore with both the Hockey News and Score tabbing the Wolves to finish last while McKeen's felt that the Ramapithicines would be the eventual basement dwellers.

Confirmation of these predictions begins on Thursday - drop the puck.

Savard Rumour

And the rumours start flying...

On Tuesday afternoon, Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com cited a Boston Bruins team source that center Marc Savard(notes) "could miss the entire 2010-2011 season with post-concussion syndrome," writing:

The source stressed that there are many unknowns at this point. "It's not a good situation," the source said. "It's complex. Not sure how this will play out."

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced on the first day of training camp last week that the star forward has been experiencing post-concussion symptoms and would not participate in camp until he was medically cleared. Savard is with the team and is being treated.

Again: The ESPN source is saying "could." Not "will." Not "certain to." Considering that Paul Kariya(notes) said he's taking a season off to shake off his post-concussion symptoms, it's not completely outlandish to believe the same fate could befall another concussed player.

But Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli smacked back at the report on Tuesday evening via Boston's website:

"As I stated on Friday, Marc Savard is suffering from symptoms related to post-concussion syndrome. He is under the care of our doctors. Any reports that suggest that there are any other issues regarding Marc, or him not playing for the Bruins this season, are completely inaccurate.

"Also, as I have previously stated, when there is a change in Marc's status, I will issue an update."

At the Bruins Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday night, Stanley Cup of Chowder reports Chiarelli said Savard will be back "soon," which is more declarative than anything in the statement above. He also called out "new media" and "blogs" for their coverage of Savard trade rumors. Not sure which one of those Sportsnet fits under.

Challenge Cup Schedule

The Challenge Cup season gets underway on October 7th with the puck dropping in 6 neutral site games, including a rematch of last season's Challenge Cup Finalists. The Barbarians also make a return to the FunHL as they open their Challenge Cup season against the Edge.

Week 1 and Week 12 are the two neutral site games and marks the only meeting between teams during the season but otherwise teams will play home and home series against 9 of the other teams in the league with the top four making it to the best of three semi-final and Challenge Cup Final games. Week 17 the league breaks for its All-Star game with the Calgary Conference challenging the Out of Calgary Conference for FunHL supremacy.

NHL '11

Hey hockey fans!
Not sure how many of you do the XBox 360 thing, but EA Sports just released NHL 11, and if NHL 10 was any indication, it just keeps getting better. I believe on XBox Live through the EA servers you can actually create a league with custom teams... which means we could actually put our drafted rosters in, and play them head to head.
Anyone interested?

NEXUS Off-Season Ramblings

Positive thinking – the Flames will be super awesome and make the playoffs (if Iggy greatly outscores Martin St. Louis in process of this, a certain GM will be crying).

Welcome back to the former Barbarians GM! Is the new team going to be called the “Barboys or “The Losbians?? (ok, that was funnier in my mind before I typed it).

Congratulations to Mr. Chelios on an illustrious career! This guy definitely would have been FUNHL FP material in his prime!!

Anonymous sources report to the Nexus that the Highlanders planned to increase their odds of winning the Predator in 2010-11 by hiring a hit man to take out the Bladerunners’ GM. It all fell through when the guy wanted 100 million over 15 years.

Sucks to be Taylor Hall – playing for the Edmonton Oilers AND the Severed Heads, uggh… ;-) From the other perspective, both the Oilers and Heads should be happy to have him.

Would anyone be shocked if the Sedins go #1 and 2 in the FUNHL Entry Draft this year?? The Nexus wouldn’t.

A new poll states that the 6 worst places to live in are Edmonton, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Lethbridge, rural Nova Scotia and Nanton. What a weird coincidence that these are where the Out of Calgary Conference's FUNHL GMs are located! (however, with associate GM Breakenridge living in Calgary, does that give the CC 7 teams and the OCC 5 teams??)

Stay tuned for a pre-season prediction list including a comparison of how the Nexus and GM Hilton did with their pre-season predictions from last season. We’re rarely right – such is the fun of all the intangibles that occur during a season!

Top FUNHL Prospects

With our Prospect Draft approaching I thought I would give my annual accounting of the top 12 prospects.

1. Tyler Seguin-L Bos

The one 'no-brainer' pick this year, Seguin is most likely to end up as a center when he makes the NHL full time, but his talent is undeniable. If any other player gets picked first overall I will be shocked worse than Darth Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi. The only downside is that as a natural pivot he's in a logjam behind three regulars (Savard, Krejci and Bergeron) and in competition with prospects Colborne and Hamill. There are no top 6 roster spots for him to jump into, so he'll likely spend another year in junior before making the show.

2. Cam Fowler-D Ana

The offense first rearguard fell on draft day because of concerns of his play in the defensive zone. Fortunately, FUNHL Gms could care less how well he plays in his own end, and only focus on the points he can produce - which are substantial. Described as a 'Mike Green' type, he is the prototype for FUNHL defenders. There is a need for him on the Ducks, but he will need a year or more in junior/minors before he stakes a claim to a regular role.

3. Brett Connolly-L TBay

A high risk/reward pick, Connolly is thought of as a fast Brett Hull. Unfortunately, he's had two hip surgeries that all but wiped out his last junior season. The Bolts are a good fit for him, but the chance he could end up hampered by a set of bad wheels is a big cautionary flag. He should be nurtured slowly by the new Bolts regime, so expect another year of junior, followed by a slow apprenticeship on the third line and 2nd powerplay unit. Will take off as St Louis starts to wind down.

4. Nino Neidereitter-R NYI

A strapping power forward with goal scoring ability, Neidereitter wowed at the WJC for Switzerland and then upped his game again at the Olympics where he was the most dangerous forward for his country every game. There is a real chance he makes the Islanders out of training camp given his advanced size and speed. The downside is that he is an Islander, a team that has a habit of turning prospects into suspects.

5. Erik Gudbranson-D Fla

The third overall selection at the NHL ED is an all-purpose work-horse defenseman. He's so good at everything his offense might be overlooked. Physically intimidating, defensively sound, and yet capable of handling himself in offensive situations, Gudbranson is one of the prospects most likely to be in the NHL sooner rather than later, and with Florida's weak defense corps could be elevated to a top 4 role quickly. Think Scott Stevens lite.

6. Ryan Johanssen-C Clb

A big power pivot play maker in the Ryan Getzlaf mold. The Bluejackets are drooling at the thought of him lining up next to Rick Nash, but the towering center will have to spend at least another year in juniors before he makes the show. Once he arrives there are few roadblocks to him assuming a top 6 forward spot.

7. Sean Couturier-C QMJHL

A huge skill centerman from the Quebec league, he lead that league in scoring last year. Compared to Vincent Lecavalier at the same age he is a top candidate (along with the WHL's wunderkind Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Swedish defenseman Adam Larsson) for 1st overall in the 2011 draft. A potential franchise player talent, to get him you'll have to burn a year of his eligibility. Also, make sure you don't call out 'Sylvain Couturier' as the former LA King forward is currently toiling in Germany and is unlikely to make an NHL comeback.

8. Jeff Skinner-R Car

The ex-figure skater is a pure sniper. A tad undersized, he nevertheless scored 50 times in junior and has the kind of talent that can overcome concerns about his skating, or the fact he will eventually have to play for the Hurricanes.

9. Tyler Ennis-L Buf

Skinny (164lbs), short (5'7"), and unbelievably skilled (he tore up the AHL last year with 65pts in 69 games), Ennis is more than a year older than most prospects and could be ready to make an impact immediately. He has a lot of odds against him, but a top 6 forward role is possible for the Sabres, and in a short call up last season he demonstrated close to ppg ability (9pts in 10 games). If he can avoid injury, he might be a top ROY candidate.

10. Jonathon Blum-D Nsh

A moderately sized defenseman (6'1", 180lbs), Blum is an offense first guy who has had two years to mature in minors. A future powerplay QB, his offensive instincts are what will get him to the Predators roster despite lots of young talent on their blue-line ahead of him. His numbers in junior were impressive, but at the AHL he played a full season injury free, and was over a ppg in the playoffs (8pts in 7games).

11. Oliver Ekman-Larsson-D Phx

Same story as Blum above, except that he has had one less year to marinate in the Swedish league, and has fewer competitors ahead of him on the Coyotes roster. A slick skating offensive defenseman, he is a future powerplay QB for the future Winnipeg Jets.

12. Ondrej Pavelec-G Atl

Traditionally I reserve the 12th spot for a Flames prospect, but this year, the pickings are pretty slim. Greg Nemisz is the best of the lot, but barring an improvement in his skating speed he is a long shot to be anything other than a Darren McCarty type. Ryan Howse is a pure goal scorer, but lacks so many other dimensions that it is difficult to project a top 6 forward spot for his future. The rest are 3rd line checkers (Bill Arnold, Mitch Wahl) and defensive defenders (Matt Pelech, Tim Erixon), so for this year, a Flame prospect is not in the cards as far as I can see.

Enter Pavelec. He is the clear likely starter for the Thrashers, but given their enormous problems defensively, he is highly unlikely to be drafted outright, even as a backup. As a prospect though, he is about perfect. A terrific minor career, a wicked save %, and the fact he chased the injury prone Lehtonen out of town, makes him a goaltender to watch. As the D improves in front of him, the future Quebec Nordiques netminder should have a long and productive career.

The Final Vote Tally - Only Prop#8 passes

Rule Proposal Voting

FOR A PROPOSAL TO PASS IT WOULD NEED 9YEAS OUT OF 12 RESPONSES. IF IMPLEMENTATION IS FOR THIS UPCOMING YEAR IT MUST BE UNAMINOUS.

AN ABSTAINING VOTE IS CONSIDERED A NO VOTE.

THANKS TO ALL 12 Gms WHO TOOK PART IN THE DEBATES AND THE VOTING!

FOR THE RECORD, ONLY PROPOSAL #8 PASSED. HERE ARE ALL THE RESULTS:

#1. Proposed

That GMs be granted the right to waive their team's Franchise Players. This shall include use of both waiver wire and waiver draft. Upon being waived the former FP loses all status. Further to this, I propose that the requirement that a team always have 2 Franchise Players be amended to be a limit of 2 Franchise Players instead.

Implementation:
To start 2010-2011 season

DEFEATED: 4N; 1A; 7Y

#2. Proposal:

That limited Entry Draft trading be allowed. It is restricted to an exchange that takes place post-slot-selection draft between only two GMs, who agree to swap BOTH their 1st and 2nd round ED picks for the current year in exchange for some other consideration in the form of other traded assets like prospects, RFAs, FPs, and/or PrD picks being exchanged.

Trading of other ED picks, or single picks, would not be permitted

Implementation:
2011-2012 season

DEFEATED: 6N; 1A; 5Y

#3. Proposed:

Initial lottery chips (baseline) based on final finishing order as follows:
First place - 12 chips, through to Last place - 1 chip

Earned chips - over the course of the season, a team earns an extra chip for every H2H win in the H2H regular season (Playoffs are rewarded with the Challenge Cup, and only include partial teams hence they are excluded)

DEFEATED: 10N; 1A; 1Y

#4. Proposed:

That a GM holding rights to an RFA at the Entry Draft be allowed to match with any available FP replacement pick or the first available non-FP replacement pick, at his or her discretion.

Implementation:
To start 2010-2011 season

DEFEATED: 9N; 1A; 2Y

#5. Proposed:

- Teams that announce they are intending to select a new FP are seeded at the front of the draft.

- If more than one team is intent on selecting a new FP they are seeded 1st and 2nd (etc.) based on their lottery rankings.

- Teams that are re-seeded are also re-seeded at the end of the 2nd to reflect the snake draft. So if Corey is moved up to pick #1, he is also moved to pick #24 for the purposes of the 2nd round. After the 2nd round lottery placement is in effect.

- Only unrestricted free agents may be drafted by reseeding. No RFAs (even ones own), or prospects may be selected. If a team is going to be re-seeded it must be with the express purpose of selecting an otherwise unrestricted free agent.

DEFEATED: 8N; 2A; 2Y

#6. Proposed:

Be it resolved that the rules are acceptable as they are and that a moratorium on changing the rules be implemented for the next five years barring unanimous decision that there is an emergency need for change.

DEFEATED: 9N; 1A; 2Y

#7. Proposed:

that we modify the current Injury Replacement rules to create two categories of IR: the current form of IR would be Re-callable IR in that the injured player can be brought back up by the GM should they return to health but the cost is, as it is now, your first (or subsequent) WD pick in the upcoming WD; the new category of IR would be Long-term IR in which the player (presumably an FP or valued and promoted Prospect) is placed on IR for the remainder of the FunHL season and can NOT be recalled by the GM until the following season. Long-term IR would not "cost" the GM anything other than the player on Long-term IR would not be available to the GM again that season.

DEFEATED: 5N; 2A; 5Y

#8 Proposed:

Removal of the last place ENTRY-DRAFT lottery bonus.

Chips based on final finishing order as follows:
First place - 12 chips, through to Last place - 1 chip

PASSED 9Y; 1A; 2N

#9. Proposed:

All teams get one chip in the lottery. (can't work in concert with #9)

DEFEATED: 8N; 1A; 3Y

#10. Mike Getta's SSP lottery proposal

DEFEATED: 7N; 2A; 3Y

Just a reminder: Rule Proposal Voting Deadline

Rule Proposal Voting Deadline: Just a reminder: voting on the FunHL proposals are due September 4th (i.e. tomorrow) by midnight EST. Whether you vote online or whether you've sent your votes to Cameron and me, please -- severedheads@shaw.ca and b0bc@yahoo.com(that's 'b-zero-b-c-@', not an 'O') -- send us your votes. We are missing official tallies from Darrell, Cory, and Collin... Mike Breckenridge (sp?), your vote has been tallied by Richard, however, as you probably well know, you have priority over Richard when it comes to the actual vote. I don't have to count Richard's if you do in fact vote.

The rumour is true that the goaltending stats equation will not change this year.

We still need a confirmation from Mike Breckenridge regarding the DC post that Richard has taken off and whether he is interested in taking it over for this year or from Darrell or any other GM as there is one vacancy on the DC currently (Chris, it's your chance! Chris, it's your chance! ... maybe)

Cameron and I will be posting in a hopefully joint post about which rules passed and which rules did not. Another reminder, there are 10 proposals, including Mike Getta's SSP rule number 10.

I look forward to your emails or, if not, I will be forced to take your votes from the FunHL blog.

Thanks for your attention in this matter.

Since no one else has mentioned it...

I hadn't seen it in any posts, though I haven't scanned back to May/June, but as I read it, for the record, goalie shutouts will continue to be worth 3.75, which remains the baseline figure as per last year's rule and only a mild change in league wide scoring, down 0.14.

Draft dilemma

Hey all,

So when we booked the ED, I knew it was on my Dad's birthday, but he has always been very minimalist about celebrations, so I felt safe being able to be free by dinnertime after the draft. Also other GMs' conflicts for other dates seemed more major.

Ironically, my Dad has decided to propose a more extensive plan for his birthday, which now poses more of a conflict. While I can still attend on-line, I always do prefer to see everyone in person, so here's the bottom line (and I take no offense and fully understand if it may not work for others either logistically or economically, so speak freely - I have no desire to put anyone in an uncomfortable position):

I will be at the Delta Lodge at Kananaskis for that weekend. I will be inquiring with them this weekend as to the availability of a conference room we could occupy for the draft (with internet access of course) if so desired; and if feasible, I will look at covering that cost for the group (unless it is beyond my ability). That still leaves individual cost of travel/gas, and whatever we decide to do for food in K-country though.

Please give it some thought, as it will only work if it doesn't cause another GM to have to change from attending to not attending. I will post an update on availability of a conference room, and whether I can cover the cost, if people can let me know (through blog or private email) whether a ED "Retreat" on the 2nd would be an option.

Thanks!

Dan

10 Things I Look Forward To

10. A healthy Malkin. Of all the problems the Heads had last year, and they were legion, the injury to Malkin was front and center.

9. Iggy gets 1000pts. Probably punches his HOF ticket when he does.

8. The Flames chemistry experiment. Is Jay-Bo an elite shutdown guy or does he have real offense? Will Ollie Jokinen get 50? Or can he still get 70? What about Tanguay? Are Iggy's PPG/40+goal seasons history? Which Kipper will show up?

7. The Oilers. For three reasons; they are going to get greased most every night, Taylor Hall is sure to get prime offensive ice as they build the team around him, and reading Lowetide.

6. Heatley+Thornton part deux.

5. The Heritage Classic. I even like the hybrid throwback jerseys.

4. Playing the Great Whites like a bridge hand. We have similar holes in our roster and he has some nice RFA pieces that will make strategy important, and fun. If he doesn't express loathing and disgust at least once I will be dissapointed.

3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. He scored the clinching goal for Canada in a recent 1-0 victory over the US in the latest U18 tournament, and scouts are using 'Sakic' and 'Yzerman' as comparables. He's in a dogfight for1st overall next year so expectations are high.

2. Watching the World Jr finals with Oliver for the third year in a row. He's 3 and has his own Team Canada Uni.

1. Drinking Jagermeister from the Predator Cup.

4.

500 Goals?

History books say that Rocket Richard was the first player to ever amass 500 goals in professional hockey.

Turns out he may not even be the first Montreal Canadien to do the trick.

Here's how history short changes one of its all time greats.

Rule Proposal 9

Lottery change:

Removal of the last place lottery bonus.

Chips based on final finishing order as follows:
First place - 12 chips, through to Last place - 1 chip

I just wanted to have this change on the books until something better comes along.

Rule Proposal #8 (I think)

I propose that we modify the current Injury Replacement rules to create two catagories of IR: the current form of IR would be Recallable IR in that the injured player can be brought back up by the GM should they return to health but the cost is, as it is now, your first (or subsequent) WD pick in the upcoming WD; the new catagory of IR would be Long-term IR in which the player (presumably an FP or valued and promoted Prospect) is placed on IR for the remainder of the FunHL season and can NOT be recalled by the GM until the following season. Long-term IR would not "cost" the GM anything other than the player on Long-term IR would not be available to the GM again that season.

Reasoning: Corey cites a very rare situation whereby an FP is so useless that he wants the right to waive him. Like Cam, I really don't like this but I do recognize that a GM can get handcuffed by an FP who is experiencing unchecked uselessness. The current IR rule was designed to address situations like this but there is the presumption that the player will heal and be available at some point during the season (indeed the player is returned to the roster at each WD). For a player that is coming back, this makes a lot of sense. The current IR rule is akin to an advance on the upcoming WD but where the player needing to be replaced due to injury is gone for the season is simply NOT coming back, the IR rule seems unreasonably expensive.

This is similar to the NHL in that, in cases of injury, the normal rules of bringing players up through waivers are suspended (indeed you can even recall players from the junior ranks, if needed).

Rule Change Proposal

Lottery or No Lottery?

I put forth the following proposal regarding slot selection determination.

Implimentaion 2011-2012 determined by this coming year.

During the course of the FuNHL regular season, a franchise is awarded 12 points for finishing a week with the most Predator Cup points. All remaining teams are awarded points in decreasing increments of 1 for thier standing during any given week. We will call these points Slot Selction Points (SSL) for this proposal.

eg. 12 SSL points for most Predator Cup points down to 1 point for fewest Predator Cup points per week. This gives a franchise the possibility to accumulate up to 240 SSL points (12 points/week x 20 weeks), or as few as 20.

At years end the franchise with the most SSL points selects thier ED slot first, the next selection goes to the franchise with the next highest SSL points until each franchise has selected thier ED slot.

Final Predator Cup standing would determine the winner in the case of ties.

I feel this system is unbiased and rewards franchises accordingly.

Rule Change Proposal #2: Re-submitted

Thanks to Dan for his wordsmithing.

Rationale:
To allow GMs more latitude in choosing their FP and to increase league parity.

1.) Currently the only way to acquire an elite level UFA is to win the draft lottery or work out an overly complex and slightly questionable trade with the lucky GM who did win the draft lottery. This proposal simplifies the trade and brings it entirely above board.

2.) Universal access to elite UFAs for the purpose of making them Franchise Players will disperse the best players throughout the league and potentially promote parity.

Apologies to those who want greater restrictions, however for practical reasons this proposal does not require an FP replacement at the Entry Draft as part of the trade.

Rule Change Proposal #4: Re-submitted

Also not any changes on this one.

I propose that a GM holding rights to an RFA at the Entry Draft be allowed to match with any available FP replacement pick or the first available non-FP replacement pick, at his or her discretion.

Implementation:
To start 2010-2011 season

Rationale:
RFA status is supposed to confer an advantage on the team which owns the player. This proposal secures that advantage during Franchise Player replacement.

Rule Change Proposal #1: Re-submitted

Essentially no changes from the initial proposal.

I propose that GMs be granted the right to waive their team's Franchise Players. This shall include use of both waiver wire and waiver draft. Upon being waived the former FP loses all status. Further to this, I propose that the requirement that a team always have 2 Franchise Players be amended to be a limit of 2 Franchise Players instead.

Implementation:
To start 2010-2011 season

Rationale:
If a Franchise Player is doing so poorly that they do not deserve a spot on the roster for whatever reason, the GM should be allowed to deal with him as if he were any other player. Sometimes the FP will have sufficient value to be tradable. Sometimes, not so much. Regardless, it should fall to the GM to solve the problem as best he or she can.

RULE PROPOSAL #5 and #6

Ok, first off, I tend to hate everything proposed so far, but I do detect a theme to most of the proposals;

'There is an FP I want available in Free Agency, but there is no way for me to get a shot at drafting him outside of winning the lottery'.

And of course, that player in this case is Getzlaf (three years ago or so it would have been Lecavalier).

I'd made this suggestion in the comments to one of the proposals, or in conversation with Doug, and I think it works much better than ED pick trading (Pandora's box should be so ripe with Evil), or the other suggestions;

Proposed:

- Teams that announce they are intending to select a new FP are seeded at the front of the draft.

- If more than one team is intent on selecting a new FP they are seeded 1st and 2nd (etc.) based on their lottery rankings. For example if Corey and I both announce we are selecting new FPs, Corey gets #1, and I (as pick 11), get #2.

- Teams that are re-seeded are also re-seeded at the end of the 2nd to reflect the snake draft. So if Corey is moved up to pick #1, he is also moved to pick #24 for the purposes of the 2nd round.

- Only unrestricted free agents may be drafted by reseeding. No RFAs (even ones own), or prospects may be selected. If a team is going to be re-seeded it must be with the express purpose of selecting an otherwise unrestricted free agent.

As I see it this proposal accomplishes several things;

- it increases the likelihood that the best unrestricted free agents become FPs
- it allows teams that are trying to rebuild to move up in the draft
- it does not allow ED pick trading
- it does not allow teams to move up with the intent of 'spiking' another teams RFA
- it retains the 'cost' of replacing an FP.

Proposal #6

Simple enough; be it resolved that the rules are acceptable as they are and that a moratorium on changing the rules be implemented for the next five years barring unanimous decision that there is an emergency need for change. My annual 'lets stop screwing around' proposal,

Rule Change Proposal #3

Revised after some excellent discussion:

I would like to blend some of the ideas proposed - I think the "activity" reward is too cumbersome to track, but the H2H reward is being tracked anyway for the Challenge Cup. So here we go:

Initial chips (baseline) based on final finishing order as follows:
First place - 12 chips, through to Last place - 1 chip

Earned chips - over the course of the season, a team earns an extra chip for every H2H win in the H2H regular season (Playoffs are rewarded with the Challenge Cup, and only include partial teams hence they are excluded)

This way a team can improve their odds for the draft lottery right up until the last 6 weeks, which should mean right up to the trade deadline for practical purposes, which will hopefully motivate them to do as well as possible for as long as possible

Rules Proposals

Just a follow-up to Bob's posting...
Now that we have had discussion back and forth on the proposals, can the GMs who submitted the original proposals please re-post, and please include any changes to the proposal based on the discussions. We need to work toward final forms for voting purposes...

I hope the Barbarians are back and other FUNHL business

Dear FUNHL,

Rumor has it by email and by facebook and by this very blog that Mike B., former GM of the Barbarians is at least temporarily reclaiming his role as GM of the Lost Boys, while Richard takes a year off to consider his role in the pool for the future other than commentator etc. I hope someone has told Mike B. that the entry draft will be most likely held at Collin and Colleen's place on saturday October 2nd starting around 11AM MST. Having just booked my airline tickets for this date, I certainly expect the entry draft to be then.

Because of the time pressures we all have, Chris from the Scourge had put forth two names to me in private in case we needed them which brings the entire expansion debate up again. I dont think we need to address that now, but we may want to in the future.

To my knowledge there are 4 or 5 rule proposals that are being discussed. I would like them to be fine tuned for mid-August ie. August 15th and final discussions about these rules to be completed by the labor-day weekend and the vote being due on September 10th. Please email your vote to myself at b0bc@yahoo.com or to Cameron at severedheads@shaw.ca.

Which brings me to my next point, with Richard not being around during the year, we have a vacancy on the disputes committee (DC) and I'll be fielding nominations for the one vacancy by your email or your response to this post.

Thank you for your attention and your comments
