2018 FUNHL Week One Line-ups and A Successful Entry Draft
With the Sudden departure of the Barbarians, The FUNHL has a new Team, Married with Kittens.
The new Team, MwK, is GM'd by Dayna and Craig whom we welcome to the League.
The Draft went by in record time, including the sit down lunch.
Many thanks to Brian for organizing the conference room and providing the Master - both Omnivore and pre and post ED trades.
Thanks to Corey or organizing the online stats. And yes, Corey, as League Statistician, I owe you $20 dollars as did not need to pay the entry fee (We shall fix that later)
Corey suggested that we move to a 5pm MST Monday deadline, but this would require a vote that was unanimous. There was some discussion, but voting ended today.
There were 7 YES votes and 5 NO votes. I have discussed the results with Corey.
Therefore for all lineups, from Week 2 on, the final deadline will still remain 6pm MST
Thanks to Doug for the Challenge Cup Schedule below
I believe all of the Week One Preliminary/ Revised and Final Line-ups should be on the Blog under Corey's post for Week One Rosters. Players who were dropped will only be able on the Waiver Wire for Bidding with Week 2 Line-ups. If these players are not claimed, they will be vanished into the ether until the Waiver Draft 1
Please post your final Week One line-up here (or I'll copy/paste email)Sorry Corey there are more revisions and trades for you to sort out.
This Waiver Wire List will come out tomorrow.
Thank you,
Bob

Challenge Cup Schedule 17-18 - No Neutral Site Edition!!
Hi Everyone, the Challenge Cup returns to the FunHL on Wednesday as well as regular league play.
The Bladerunners look to defend the symbol of FunHL Head-to-Head supremacy as they open their 2017-2018 campaign on the road visiting the Edge.
The full FunHL Challenge Cup Schedule is below. The team in pink is at home and in blue is on the road.
The NHL schedule makers have given us a schedule that allows for each team to play a full home and away schedule against every other team in the league thought the opening week, Christmas break and All-Star break does lead to some slightly shorter weeks on Week 1, Week 12, Week 13, Week 17 and Week 18. So this season
The Playoffs will begin with the start of Week 23 on Monday February 26th. The Finals will begin with the start of Week 26 on Monday March 19th.
Good luck to everyone.

The 6 Rule Proposals and Voting
Dear My fellow FUNHL GMs:
So with Weekend over AND 6 Rule Proposals to be voted on, time to go over AGAIN, when VOTES are due so I can send out the results both by email AND on the Blog.
In addition, I will give you my opinion as to when each proposal if passed would take effect.
Actually, 9/12 votes would be good for ALL of the Proposals this year, 2017-18 EXCEPT Propospal # 3 - The Omnibus because of the unlimited promotion/demotion clause for prospects, gives some GMs an unfair advantage this year and would change drafting strategy for prospects and thus ALL of the Proposal #3 , except for eliminating WD2 could NOT take effect until next year 2018-19 (i.e. eliminating the WW, IR). (Rule# 73)
So just in case you only voted for #3., maybe you should give more thought to the proposals 1, 2, 4-6.
More importantly, IT is expected that ALL 12 GMs will vote for all 6 proposals. I have received 6 votes for each one of the six proposals AND up to 8 for the first 3.
Please Remember Voting ENDS on WEDNESDAY NIGHT. I leave for Calgary Early Thursday morning so I would like to post the results on the 27th evening before midnight, MST
Either place your vote on the Blog or send it to me at b0bc@yahoo.com.
Comments that advocate a position in the past or current is just that comment; They are not votes. You can change your vote if you wish as long as I know, or it is the Blog.
Please VOTE Yes or No. AND AGAIN I repeat, if you do not vote, that is considered a NO; as well as if you abstain, that is a NO.
For any proposal, 9 yes to pass, 4 no to defeat.
My vote will be on the blog.
Thank Bob

Proposal # 6 The Waiver Draft 2 Value Added Provision
Proposal #6
For Waiver Draft Two ONLY, ALL players selected would have RFA status (whether they did before or not) except for dropped promoted prospects who retain their previous status.
The benefits of this proposal would certainly be increasing player valuations for undrafted players; a pick-up of 2nd half performers would now be RFA; and 8 "new" RFA players per team
Thank you,
Bob
Proposal 5: FP position exemption at a Waiver Draft
Proposal #5.
That, in a waiver draft, the obligation to drop a number of
players from any given position be reduced by one for every Franchise
Player holding said position on that team. The total number of drops
required shall remain the same (8).
-For example, the Great Whites have Carey Price G MTL as a Franchise
Player. At the waiver draft, the team would normally be obligated to
waive at least one goaltender. Since one of their FPs is a goalie,
the obligation is reduced from 1 to zero, thus leaving the team with
the ability to keep a healthy goaltender on the roster in the event
that Price is injured.
- In my opinion, the current league status is biased against having
goalie FPs. I seek to remedy the situation.
-It should be noted that this FP exemption, does mean you don't have
to drop a centre if you have 2 FP centres, just that you are NOT obliged
to make Centre drop.
Thank you
Bob

Proposal #4 - Revision to Rule 35 - The Injury Protection Rule
Proposal #4
This Proposal would replace Rule 35, which has been badly abused:
Such that if a GM has a catastrophic injury (such as "week to week") which is verifiable by Online sources, like NHL.com, to ANY roster player, such as a FP, FA, RFA or a previously promoted prospect, that GM can employ this Injury Protection WITHOUT penalty, in order to fill that player's spot, with a prospect of their own.
However, a GM can only have a limit of two (2) players under protection at a time, maximum, AND MUST return the injured player back to the roster upon their return to health, as defined by that player's return to play in a game. Their prospect then return to their unpromoted status again.
IF said prospect is out-performing the injured player and the GM wants to keep him on his roster, he MUST, promote said prospect and try and trade or waive the previously injured player (or another player at that position). The Obvious exception here is with the return of an injured FP, as they can not be waived.
Thank you,
Bob

Proposal #3 - The Omnibus Proposal
Sep 21 at 10:51 PM
FuNHL Proposal
Short summary:
1) Abolish IR rule
2) Abolish Waiver Wire (as there will be no “waived” players)
3) Reduce to one WD with set date in early-mid December each year
4) Allow unlimited promotion/demotion of prospects (like a farm team) without penalty
Detailed explanation (TL; DR):
We
have always tried to emulate the NHL as much as possible, while trying
to keep the complexity of rules and laborious management to a minimum.
The IR rule, while well intended, has stopped being what it was supposed
to be, and is now mostly used after WD2 once there is no penalty to use
it. By allowing promotion of prospects (see below), the IR rule becomes
largely moot, and allows GMs to either plan wisely for potential
injury, or make trades to address issues that arise.
The
waiver wire arose as a consequence of prospect promotion, but is very
onorous to maintain and monitor. Sometimes a rare player of some utility
(who is not morbidly injured) comes along, but most of the WW discards
were out for lengthy periods or bottom end players. By allowing GMs to
promote prospects and send players back to the “farm” team, the would be
WW discard remains with the team. If another team see utility in that
player, who is not in use by their owning GM, there is a ripe
opportunity to make a trade offer to acquire said player. As such, I
don’t believe dropping the WW would reduce trading.
Each
year we have a small number of undrafted players who turn out to exceed
expectations, and these are picked up at WD1. But by WD2, deck chairs
on the Titanic are shuffled, and the drops are of minimal utility, such
that less than half the teams in the league even improve marginally
through WD2. In our busy lives, the amount of work to prepare for WD2
far exceeds its utility. Moreover the intent of added
gatherings/interaction via WDs is lost by WD2, often with barely half
the GMs actively “attending” by phone/online, and most drafting by
proxy. I think we lose little of value by dropping WD2. We can keep WD1
and set a fixed date (eg 2nd Saturday of December each year) so people
can plan for it. The drop rules would stay the same, protect an active
roster minus two, and keep prospects. The only difference is that
players demoted to the “farm” would by default be protected but this
would in turn expose more prospects if they have been brought up. Either
way, the same number of players are available as usual. I hope with
just one WD that we can achieve greater participation too.
All
of this derives from the free promotion/demotion of prospects. This
makes GM have to consider not only the long term value of futures (eg
next years anticipated #1 pick) against the insurance of depth players
who can step in for injury. This is exactly what NHL GMs have to
consider when they manage a farm team and NHL roster as both future and
immediate value have merit. It also creates greater utility for
prospects, giving them added value (and attraction) for trade purposes.
We do not increase the number of prospects (as I think 8 long term
locked up players is ample) as there is justifiable resistance to have
even more players tied up and undraftable each year.
Here is the End of the Long Version of Proposal for Voting.
Thank you
Bob
Proposal #2 - Elimination of Waiver Draft #2 ONLY
For those wanting to keep things very simple, a stand alone change:
Abolish WD2 and set a single WD each year for the second Saturday in December
Usual protection/drops rules apply; Waiver Wire, IR penalties would also still apply
Thank you,
Bob

Proposal #1 - Amending the IR (Rule 35 and 35.1))
Proposal #1
For the Injury Protection rule we need to return to the
original intent of FP protection when an FP is seriously injured. The criteria is as follows:
a) FPs only (up to 2 - in which case you in trouble)
b) The FP MUST be catastrophically injured or sent to the minors or holding out (i.e. > 1 month) such that the Player being listed on a official injury report (Nhl.com, yahoo.com, etc) is moot. For Examples refer to Stamkos over the last two years, Drouin in year one as a FP, Crosby's concussion year.
c) FP demotion for a prospect has NO penalty with respect to loss of a Waiver Draft pick
d) The League Founder (Cam) owes you a beer since FP DEATH is a very rare event phenomenon, but if and only if your FP is out for 50% of the season or longer.
e) Upon a FP's return to he must returned to the roster and prospect demoted.
Please send your vote to me via email (private) or post on the Blog
Thank you

Rules for Proposals and Deadlines.
Dear Fellow GMs of the FUNHL:
It is my
duty to send out an update covenant to you all indicating many of the
changes, like going online to name a large one and Waiver Wire changes
taking effect this year (players on the Wire for 1 week only for bids
and then into the ether).
With Rule Changes coming, maybe, we should review the voting system...see attachment.
In
particular, small changes, say IR or WD2 changes, pre-ED, one needs a
9/12 (75%) majority. (Rule 54.1) Major changes that may affect the
nature of the pool [like number of drafted players, positions, etc.,
generally 12/12 is needed at the ED or after. Now, I do not suspect
that sort of drastic proposal, but I have heard some interesting talk.
Goalie
stats are returning to 3.60pts per 60 minute shutout, or 0.06pts/min
after the frustration of last year's experiment with 3.49999. This is
not a proposal, but a change in the data.
Doug, please check my covenant revisions, in case of redundancy. As so you all...
Send
me any proposals for me to send out to everyone by email and blog.
Votes come to me in private or to the Blog. The Deadline for proposals
is this Friday by 6 pm MST. We have thrown around a lot of ideas, time
to get serious, or not. Voting will occur up to Sept 27th at 6pm mst
and then results will be tabulated and emailed out and blog posted.
I expect 12 votes. 9 yea votes to carry a proposal. 4 nays votes to defeat. A lack of a vote is a no vote, as is abstaining.

NEXUS News and Notes
Hello brethren GMs
First off – the Bladerunners congratulate Teemu Selanne on his acceptance to the Hockey Hall of Fame – very deserving! He was the very first Bladerunners FP when FP’s were first drafted … and played a significant role in us winning our first Predator Cup. Oh nostalgia (we will not discuss our 2nd FP pick – this is not the time or place ;-)
Second off – the Bladerunners will be making McDavid an FP this fall – and as such we need to say a fond farewell to one or potentially both of Mr. Subban and/or Mr. Backstrom. Any offer above Perry + a 4th will be considered. Ok – let me clarify that - any offer ‘significantly above ….’
Third off – it’s going to be freaking strange having McDavid as an FP – love him --- not so much the Oilers. Go McDavid and Go Flames!!
Fourth off – I think it has been years since a Nexus post – really need to do more of them and I think supposed to be posted to the Blog – will do that now. I believe constant themes involved analyzing drafts, picking on the Wolves (aka the Alpacas), yawning when facing the Shadowmen in guaranteed H to H win nights etc.
Cheers

RIP Mr. I.
Mike Ilitch, owner of Tigers and Red Wings, dies at age 87
6:45 AM ET
- ESPN.com news services
His family released a statement saying Ilitch died Friday at a local hospital. They called him a visionary who set the tone for his company and his family.
"He made such a positive impact in the world of sports, in business and in the community, and we will remember him for his unwavering commitment to his employees, his passion for Detroit, his generosity to others and his devotion to his family and friends," his son Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings Inc., said in the statement.
Family spokesman Doug Kuiper confirmed the death, but no other details were provided.
Former President George W. Bush, also the onetime owner of the Texas Rangers, was among those who offered condolences Friday night.
"Mike was a great citizen of our country, a self-made man with talent, drive, and a huge heart," Bush said in a statement. "My favorite memories with Mike are of our discussions about our shared love, baseball. Another of Mike's passions was his beloved Detroit. He generously gave back to his city and made it a better place. Most of all, Mike loved his family a lot."
Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, who won three Stanley Cups as a Red Wings player and another as a team executive, said he was "extremely saddened" to hear about Ilitch's death.
"Both Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch, as well as their entire family, have had an immeasurable impact on not only my career, but my life," Yzerman said in a statement. "Going back to the age of 18 when I arrived in Detroit, the guidance, generosity, concern and love Mr. Ilitch had always shown me and my family are things I will forever be grateful for.
"Mr. Ilitch has left an incredible legacy in baseball, hockey and Metropolitan Detroit. He will forever be remembered for all the ways he enriched our lives. Mike Ilitch will live on vividly in my mind and heart forever."
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, who worked for Ilitch as a player and manager, said, "It was an honor to work for a man who made winning the priority. Baseball is a business, but Mr. I was a baseball player who became a businessman. He loved baseball, and my memories will always be centered around the passion with which he talked about it."
Second baseman Ian Kinsler also offered an appreciation of Ilitch.
"I appreciated what Mr. Ilitch stood for," he told ESPN via text message. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to play under his ownership and feel the passion, along with the people of Detroit, that he had for his two sports franchises."
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred called Ilitch "a model owner."
"He was also a fierce believer in his home city of Detroit, and the role that the Tigers and sports played in contributing to civic pride and renewal," Manfred said in a statement. "Mr. Ilitch led a decorated life of service to his country, accomplishment in business and philanthropy in all of his endeavors. He was also extremely supportive of me both personally and professionally. On behalf of all of Major League Baseball and Mr. Ilitch's countless friends and admirers throughout the game, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife Marian and their entire family, the Tigers organization, their fans and his fellow citizens of Detroit."
"Going back to the age of 18 when I arrived in Detroit, the guidance, generosity, concern and love Mr. Ilitch had always shown me and my family are things I will forever be grateful for."Ilitch and his wife, Marian, founded Little Caesars -- later known for its "Pizza! Pizza!" ads featuring an animated "Little Caesar" -- in suburban Detroit in 1959. They eventually grew the business into one of the world's largest carryout pizza chains with several spin-off companies.
Former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman
Known simply as "Mr. I" to most people in Michigan, Ilitch was as much a fan of the often-struggling Detroit as he was of sports. When approached in 2009 by organizers of the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Ilitch agreed to sponsor the annual college football bowl game despite a poor local economy. The game was renamed the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.
"It's a sporting event, and we need sporting events," Ilitch said at the time. "It picks our community up to no end, with all the great colleges we have in this state and the professional teams that we have. Thank God for 'em, especially at times that are rough right now."
The son of Macedonian immigrants, Ilitch was born on July 20, 1929. He played baseball at Detroit's Cooley High School and was signed by his hometown Tigers after a four-year stint in the U.S. Marines, spending three years in the team's farm system before a knee injury ended his playing career.
But he found his niche in business. His family's companies had combined revenues of $2.4 billion in 2011.
It started with that first Little Caesars restaurant in Garden City, a working-class suburb west of Detroit. A food service distribution company soon followed to supply ingredients and other products for the growing number of restaurants. Blue Line Foodservice grew into one of the largest program account food service distribution companies in the U.S.
Ilitch Holdings Inc. was established in 1999 to manage the family's interests in food, sports and entertainment, and the company remained family focused. His son Christopher is president and CEO, and Marian was vice chairwoman as well as sole owner of MotorCity Casino, one of Detroit's three casinos.
Ilitch broke into sports ownership in 1982, when he paid a reported $8 million for the struggling Red Wings. Once an NHL powerhouse, the team had bottomed out to mediocrity, but it began winning again under Ilitch. The Red Wings took home the Stanley Cup in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.
Ilitch was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and Michigan Sports Hall of Fame a year later.
"Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch are incredibly passionate about Detroit and their teams," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told The Associated Press in a 2010 interview. "They create a family atmosphere with stability, loyalty and a personal touch. But we all understand we have to produce to be around for a long time."
The Detroit Lions highlighted Ilitch's importance to the city in a statement Friday night mourning his death.
"Mr. Ilitch's many positive contributions to our city and region will be everlasting and will greatly impact future generations of our community. His leadership of the Red Wings and Tigers truly set a standard of excellence," Lions president Rod Wood said.
"It was an honor to work for a man who made winning the priority. Baseball is a business, but Mr. I was a baseball player who became a businessman."As part of his long-term plan to build a Detroit-based business empire, Ilitch also bought Olympia Entertainment, which manages several restaurants, sports and entertainment venues, in 1982.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus
Husband and wife bought the downtown Fox Theatre five years later and started a massive, $12 million restoration. It reopened a year later and became a lucrative venue for musicals, plays and other productions. The Little Caesars world headquarters also was moved downtown.
Then, in 1992, the man who once dreamed of playing for the Tigers bought the team for $85 million. He moved it in 2000 from the storied but fading Tiger Stadium to Comerica Park, across from the Fox Theatre.
Unlike previous owners of both sports franchises, Ilitch opened his checkbook to sign top players -- finding solid success in hockey and a roller coaster in baseball.
The Tigers lost an American League-record 119 games in 2003 but advanced to the World Series three years later, losing in five games to the St. Louis Cardinals. Near the end of a disappointing 2008 season, Ilitch said he and the team would review everything done to put the roster together but added that focusing on the $138 million payroll wasn't the priority.
"I'm not afraid to go out and spend money," he said. "It's been very costly, but I'm not going to change my ways."
The Tigers made the AL playoffs in 2011, a return to winning that brought more fans to Comerica Park.
Former Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who currently serves as an assistant to Tigers general manager Al Avila, said it was crushing that the team never won a World Series for Ilitch.
"I can remember how bad we wanted it," Leyland said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "That's the one thing we were always brokenhearted about -- that we didn't get a World Series for him because he's the guy that we wanted it for. We just fell a little bit short."
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Ilitch was simply driven to win.
"He has a good feel for sports, baseball in particular, and that's always good when you're working for someone like that," Dombrowski said in 2010, shortly after Ilitch announced he would try to buy the Detroit Pistons; Ilitch had jumped in amid speculation another buyer might move the pro basketball team.
"When I read in the paper there was the chance that this great sports town could lose one of its professional sports franchises, I just didn't see how we could let that happen," Ilitch told The Associated Press in 2010. "The Pistons, just like the Red Wings, Tigers and the Lions, have a rich and storied tradition in this community."
"He was also a fierce believer in his home city of Detroit, and the role that the Tigers and sports played in contributing to civic pride and renewal."California billionaire and Michigan State graduate Tom Gores eventually bought the Pistons and kept the team at its arena in Auburn Hills, north of Detroit.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred
The Pistons and Red Wings will move into a new arena slated to open later this year -- named Little Caesars Arena -- located mere blocks away from Comerica Park and the Lions' Ford Field.
Ilitch's admiration of Detroit also was put on display in 2009, when General Motors -- struggling under the threat of bankruptcy -- discontinued its sponsorship of the popular General Motors Fountain at Comerica Park. Instead of selling the space to other bidders, Ilitch gave the advertising spot to each of the area's car companies that season at no cost.
"He cares about the city of Detroit. This is something he wanted to do. It's for the Big Three," Ron Colangelo, the Tigers' spokesman, said at the time.

The FUNHL Week 15 Line-ups
Week 15 is upon us. Let us summarize, Week 1-3 The Shadow led, Week 4 The Blades took over and ever since, The Scourge has been in 1st, now celebrating their 10th straight week in first.
Only once has a Team led cover to cover And that was The Vendetta's 2nd victory, to my recollection.
Regardless, with just under half the season remaining and WD2 at January's end, Things will change.
"I breathe, thus I hope"
So, please submit your line-ups by email to be posted here.
