RIP Mr. I.
Mike Ilitch, owner of Tigers and Red Wings, dies at age 87
6:45 AM ET
- ESPN.com news services
His family released a statement saying Ilitch died Friday at a local hospital. They called him a visionary who set the tone for his company and his family.
"He made such a positive impact in the world of sports, in business and in the community, and we will remember him for his unwavering commitment to his employees, his passion for Detroit, his generosity to others and his devotion to his family and friends," his son Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings Inc., said in the statement.
Family spokesman Doug Kuiper confirmed the death, but no other details were provided.
Former President George W. Bush, also the onetime owner of the Texas Rangers, was among those who offered condolences Friday night.
"Mike was a great citizen of our country, a self-made man with talent, drive, and a huge heart," Bush said in a statement. "My favorite memories with Mike are of our discussions about our shared love, baseball. Another of Mike's passions was his beloved Detroit. He generously gave back to his city and made it a better place. Most of all, Mike loved his family a lot."
Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, who won three Stanley Cups as a Red Wings player and another as a team executive, said he was "extremely saddened" to hear about Ilitch's death.
"Both Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch, as well as their entire family, have had an immeasurable impact on not only my career, but my life," Yzerman said in a statement. "Going back to the age of 18 when I arrived in Detroit, the guidance, generosity, concern and love Mr. Ilitch had always shown me and my family are things I will forever be grateful for.
"Mr. Ilitch has left an incredible legacy in baseball, hockey and Metropolitan Detroit. He will forever be remembered for all the ways he enriched our lives. Mike Ilitch will live on vividly in my mind and heart forever."
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus, who worked for Ilitch as a player and manager, said, "It was an honor to work for a man who made winning the priority. Baseball is a business, but Mr. I was a baseball player who became a businessman. He loved baseball, and my memories will always be centered around the passion with which he talked about it."
Second baseman Ian Kinsler also offered an appreciation of Ilitch.
"I appreciated what Mr. Ilitch stood for," he told ESPN via text message. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to play under his ownership and feel the passion, along with the people of Detroit, that he had for his two sports franchises."
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred called Ilitch "a model owner."
"He was also a fierce believer in his home city of Detroit, and the role that the Tigers and sports played in contributing to civic pride and renewal," Manfred said in a statement. "Mr. Ilitch led a decorated life of service to his country, accomplishment in business and philanthropy in all of his endeavors. He was also extremely supportive of me both personally and professionally. On behalf of all of Major League Baseball and Mr. Ilitch's countless friends and admirers throughout the game, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife Marian and their entire family, the Tigers organization, their fans and his fellow citizens of Detroit."
"Going back to the age of 18 when I arrived in Detroit, the guidance, generosity, concern and love Mr. Ilitch had always shown me and my family are things I will forever be grateful for."Ilitch and his wife, Marian, founded Little Caesars -- later known for its "Pizza! Pizza!" ads featuring an animated "Little Caesar" -- in suburban Detroit in 1959. They eventually grew the business into one of the world's largest carryout pizza chains with several spin-off companies.
Former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman
Known simply as "Mr. I" to most people in Michigan, Ilitch was as much a fan of the often-struggling Detroit as he was of sports. When approached in 2009 by organizers of the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Ilitch agreed to sponsor the annual college football bowl game despite a poor local economy. The game was renamed the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.
"It's a sporting event, and we need sporting events," Ilitch said at the time. "It picks our community up to no end, with all the great colleges we have in this state and the professional teams that we have. Thank God for 'em, especially at times that are rough right now."
The son of Macedonian immigrants, Ilitch was born on July 20, 1929. He played baseball at Detroit's Cooley High School and was signed by his hometown Tigers after a four-year stint in the U.S. Marines, spending three years in the team's farm system before a knee injury ended his playing career.
But he found his niche in business. His family's companies had combined revenues of $2.4 billion in 2011.
It started with that first Little Caesars restaurant in Garden City, a working-class suburb west of Detroit. A food service distribution company soon followed to supply ingredients and other products for the growing number of restaurants. Blue Line Foodservice grew into one of the largest program account food service distribution companies in the U.S.
Ilitch Holdings Inc. was established in 1999 to manage the family's interests in food, sports and entertainment, and the company remained family focused. His son Christopher is president and CEO, and Marian was vice chairwoman as well as sole owner of MotorCity Casino, one of Detroit's three casinos.
Ilitch broke into sports ownership in 1982, when he paid a reported $8 million for the struggling Red Wings. Once an NHL powerhouse, the team had bottomed out to mediocrity, but it began winning again under Ilitch. The Red Wings took home the Stanley Cup in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.
Ilitch was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and Michigan Sports Hall of Fame a year later.
"Mr. and Mrs. Ilitch are incredibly passionate about Detroit and their teams," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told The Associated Press in a 2010 interview. "They create a family atmosphere with stability, loyalty and a personal touch. But we all understand we have to produce to be around for a long time."
The Detroit Lions highlighted Ilitch's importance to the city in a statement Friday night mourning his death.
"Mr. Ilitch's many positive contributions to our city and region will be everlasting and will greatly impact future generations of our community. His leadership of the Red Wings and Tigers truly set a standard of excellence," Lions president Rod Wood said.
"It was an honor to work for a man who made winning the priority. Baseball is a business, but Mr. I was a baseball player who became a businessman."As part of his long-term plan to build a Detroit-based business empire, Ilitch also bought Olympia Entertainment, which manages several restaurants, sports and entertainment venues, in 1982.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus
Husband and wife bought the downtown Fox Theatre five years later and started a massive, $12 million restoration. It reopened a year later and became a lucrative venue for musicals, plays and other productions. The Little Caesars world headquarters also was moved downtown.
Then, in 1992, the man who once dreamed of playing for the Tigers bought the team for $85 million. He moved it in 2000 from the storied but fading Tiger Stadium to Comerica Park, across from the Fox Theatre.
Unlike previous owners of both sports franchises, Ilitch opened his checkbook to sign top players -- finding solid success in hockey and a roller coaster in baseball.
The Tigers lost an American League-record 119 games in 2003 but advanced to the World Series three years later, losing in five games to the St. Louis Cardinals. Near the end of a disappointing 2008 season, Ilitch said he and the team would review everything done to put the roster together but added that focusing on the $138 million payroll wasn't the priority.
"I'm not afraid to go out and spend money," he said. "It's been very costly, but I'm not going to change my ways."
The Tigers made the AL playoffs in 2011, a return to winning that brought more fans to Comerica Park.
Former Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who currently serves as an assistant to Tigers general manager Al Avila, said it was crushing that the team never won a World Series for Ilitch.
"I can remember how bad we wanted it," Leyland said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "That's the one thing we were always brokenhearted about -- that we didn't get a World Series for him because he's the guy that we wanted it for. We just fell a little bit short."
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Ilitch was simply driven to win.
"He has a good feel for sports, baseball in particular, and that's always good when you're working for someone like that," Dombrowski said in 2010, shortly after Ilitch announced he would try to buy the Detroit Pistons; Ilitch had jumped in amid speculation another buyer might move the pro basketball team.
"When I read in the paper there was the chance that this great sports town could lose one of its professional sports franchises, I just didn't see how we could let that happen," Ilitch told The Associated Press in 2010. "The Pistons, just like the Red Wings, Tigers and the Lions, have a rich and storied tradition in this community."
"He was also a fierce believer in his home city of Detroit, and the role that the Tigers and sports played in contributing to civic pride and renewal."California billionaire and Michigan State graduate Tom Gores eventually bought the Pistons and kept the team at its arena in Auburn Hills, north of Detroit.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred
The Pistons and Red Wings will move into a new arena slated to open later this year -- named Little Caesars Arena -- located mere blocks away from Comerica Park and the Lions' Ford Field.
Ilitch's admiration of Detroit also was put on display in 2009, when General Motors -- struggling under the threat of bankruptcy -- discontinued its sponsorship of the popular General Motors Fountain at Comerica Park. Instead of selling the space to other bidders, Ilitch gave the advertising spot to each of the area's car companies that season at no cost.
"He cares about the city of Detroit. This is something he wanted to do. It's for the Big Three," Ron Colangelo, the Tigers' spokesman, said at the time.

Bladerunners take the 4th Predator and the Personal Vendetta claim 5th Challenge Cup!
Congratulations to Brian and the Bladerunners! Their GM Sherlock has masterfully guided them to their 4th Predator Cup! While over the last month things seemed dire, The Bladerunners were able to pull away at the end. Brian joins Dan and Doug in 4 Predator Cup Club.
Meanwhile, after behind 1-0 in games to the Severed Heads, Darrell's Personal Vendetta managed to tie series in Week 26 and win the Challenge Cup for the 5th time with a 41.995 to 32.617 victory in the final week. Congratulations to Darrell for his dominance of this trophy.
The Bladerunners margin of victory was close to 18 pts over Cam and 20pts over Collin who's last week's drive was too late but placed Darrell in 4th 38pts back. Those 4 teams were the only ones that broke 900 pts. Only 4 teams broke 800pts 2 teams broke 700pts and 2 teams were in the mid 600pt range. I believe this is Cam's second straight second place finish.
Speaking of lows, the Wolves finished last securing their Herbivore 1st PRD pick in the Fall whereas Dan's Great Whites avoids it by 3pts.
According to Website the Final rankings are as follows (rounded to a whole number)
BL 931
SH 913
EGDE 911
PV 903
RAM 868
HL 860 - The Highlanders and Scourge separated by a fraction of a pt (see website)
SCRG 860
SHAD 825
BARB 759
KT 755
GW 661
WLF 658
I urge all to check out the final website rankings. It was a wired season of trades going awry, injuries at the wrong time etc. One could argue 1 of 7 different teams could have won one if fortune shined upon them.
Congrats to FP Kane for the ART Ross and FP Ovechkin for the Richard. Ironically both FPs for the EDGE who place third...i think the team's best ever finish.
Finally the Omnivore winner will be announced later.
Again Congrats to Brian and Darrell!
And again, many thanks for Corey and Brian's work during the year especially on the website and the masters.
Take care,
b!

FUNHL News and Notes
Hey everyone,
Sorry for posting so little so far this year, I'll just say things have been weird and leave it at that.
- If you haven't seen Dan's post below, its pretty funny. In a 'car-accident-funny' kind of way. Also, GRAPHS!
- Since the first season of the FUNHL, injuries have played a major role in determining the winner. More than ever I am convinced that you have to stay healthy just to have a shot at the title. It was only a few years back when I lost my top 4-5 picks to injury before the first games of the season were even played. Season over. So along with Dan, lets pour one out for Doug whose Highlanders were operating with pretty much just the bottom half of his roster for most of the year.
- Three years ago Rob made a bold decision to pick two new FPs at the draft. Sadly, this last week saw the final undoing of that rebuild as Rob having already moved on from Tuuka Rask, now finds a way to part with the hockey media's favourite whipping boy, Jonathon Drouin. At the time, taking Drouin had a kind of logic, but it clearly hasn't worked out as an investment for Rob.
- Also, cross your fingers that Burke finds a way to get Drouin to Calgary. He may have sucked for Rob, but he has a very, very, high ceillng.
- I'm probably the only person bugged by this, but there really has been a unified media position on Drouin - that he should 'shut up and play', that he 'isnt doing himself any favours', etc. Now that position may actually be true, but I am not convinced it is. As I understand things, Drouin was unhappy with his ice-time, and usage by the team. He complained about it internally. He eventually made a quiet trade request, and finally his agent went public in a hope it would get things done. The truth is his development path and ice-time is unusual. He is clearly capable of being a top 6 forward in TBay right now. Yzerman though, has leverged his youth against Drouin, keeping him off the PP, giving him bad zone starts, crap linemates, lengthy stints in the AHL, etc. The opposite of how most teams treat their prized pupils. Why? Because it keeps the costs on Drouin lower for the forseeable future. A year delay in when he can hit free agency, poor counting stats for him to negotiate with, etc, this is all about money, and how to pay Drouin as little as possible. By contrast, look at how Calgary handled Sean Monahan - they let him make the team as an 18 year old. Gave him vets to play with. Gradually built up his icetime and confidence, and now that Monahan has had some success, Calgary is going to pay him fairly.
I hope Drouin gets the fresh start that he wants in a place that isn't more interested in nickles and dimes than the bigger picture..
- I feel bad for Brian. Sure he's winning, but he never pulled away from the pack, and now as the season winds down he's slowly being reeled in. Its a slow motion tragedy watching each day as the ground beneath your feet gradually crumbles. Its one thing to lose quick and clean like Dan did when Price went down, but that (like losing your top 2 Cs before Xmas) is relatively painless - the cerebral embolism of the hockey pool world - it pops and its all over, nice, peaceful, and quiet, and you know unequivocally that its time to watch draft boards and collect futures . Its another thing entirely to be hunted down from behind, with the grinding day to day panic that comes from knowing your wounds are mortal, and that you are slowly bleeding out.
- Jagr is leading the Panthers in scoring this year. He's 44. And probably not human.
- The biggest heist of the year hss to be what Calgary got for Kris Russell. Russell, is a modrrately mobile, defensive defender with low offense, but a great character guy, and a willing shot blocker. By any reasonable metric he is a bottom pair defender. Yet Calgary flipped him for; a 2nd (which could become a 1st), a 'B' prospect (2-way C Brett Pollock), and young depth defender Jyrki Jokipakka. IMO that is a massive, massive, overpay. From what I've seen Jokipakka is already as good if not better than Russell, not to mention, bigger, cheaper, and younger, but adding a potential 1st round pick, and throwing in a prospect for Kris Russell is a huge victory.
- Calgary scouts will have 4 picks in the first two rounds. Last year we had a similar plethora of picks and came away with Dougie Hamilton, Rasmus Andersson, and Oliver Kyllington. I can't see us topping that kind of haul, but it will be fun watching them try!
- My own rankings;
1. Mathews
2. Puljujarvi
3. Laine
4. Chychrun
5. Tkachuk
6. Nylander
I hope we avoid Tkachuk as I have concerns anout how much he is being floated by his linemates (Mathews last year, a stacked high-octane London Knights this year).
I have Puljujarvi ahead of Laine which is not the popular opinion. At the WJC, Puljujarvi was statistically dominating, but scouts fell in love with Laine's size, speed, and elite release. Laine has also carried over his exploits better than Puljujarvi to the Fiinish league (where Laine is averaging 6 shots per game, the next best is just over 3). So why do I still prefer Puljujarvi? In part because he does all the things that Laine doesn't, he uses his speed to break down defenses, whereas Laine uses his to escape them. Laine is a big, strong, blur with a cannon, whereas Puljujarvi is a dancing giant of a possession forward. Puljujarvi is a gifted playmaker, but also capable of scoring goals almost as well as Laine. In truth, Puljujarvi's skillset is the closest to Jagr's I've seen yet in a prospect. If Calgary wins the lottery they should take Mathews, but they should then immediately trade Monahan for the pick necessary to select Puljujarvi. He's going to be an absolute beast.
- If I were the Leafs and they dont win the lottery, I consider trading down to around pick 6 long and hard. A team like Calgary at pick 6 would be drooling over the chance to pick in the top 3, and they have the assets (picks especially) to make a wicked offer. Given there are no high-end centers between 2-6, Toronto takes the deal, slides down a few spots, and selects Nylander the younger to pair with his brother. Calgary takes Puljujarvi.
- Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen. An old fashioned FP trade! I call that a win for both teams, with an edge to Columbus. The Jackets get a player on a cheaper deal, under control for longer, and at a key position they can build around. Any forwards they draft moving forward will have a D corps to play in front of (Jones, Murray, J. Johnson, Werenski, etc.) that will cushion their arrival - something Johansen never had. Nashville has craved a #1C forever, and Johansen fits the bill to a T. Nashville is also in 'win now mode' as key puzzle pieces Rinne and Weber are aging out of their prime. But moving forward Nashville will have a Set Jones sized hole on D that won't be easy to fill, even if Josi and Ellis currently pick up the slack without much effort.
- If I were the Washington Capitals I'd be scared witless that Pittsburgh has gotten its act together over the 2nd half of the season. Crosby is back near the top of the scoring race, Malkin is healthy, Letang is back, the D corps isnt as useless as it was. Even MA Fleury is looking really good. If there is an upset in the East it will be Pitt knocking off Ovie and Co.
- Wow, is Edmonton ever buckets of terrible. Not quite as horrific as last year, but still putrid. My personal hope is that they repeat what they did last year, sending out a handful of picks at the drsft for another busted defense prospect like Griffin Reinhart. Erik Gudbranson in Fla for a 1st and 2nd would be perfect.
- It may seem like a lifetime ago now, but on day 5 the Knights Templar were in 1st place.
- So its coming down to the last few weeks of the season and who is always there to act as my personal roadblock to sucess? F*cking Darrell. It's always Darrell. Always, Darrell. Apparently he is immune to having injuries wreck his season. In a 'bad' year I collect a Herbie, in a bad year for Darrell he finishes 4th.
- I'm going to assume that everyone loves Corey's pool website choice as much as I do (probably more given how few of the features I've used). He put big effort in to making it work for us, and deserves our thanks.
Someone buy that man a beer!

Waiver wire and Prospect Promotion Rule Proposal
Greetings Everyone,
As you know we had a spirited discussion proor to the draft tegarding the failed rule proposals - proposals that nevertheless held majority support from members of the league.
Out of that conversation came a suggestion that we combine elements of the proposals to address some of the concerns felt by a majority of the pool;
- That the waiver wire system is too complicated and unwieldy, and that resolving waiver wire conflicts has xreated a huge and unecessary complex body of rules
- That teams are using the wire rather than making trades
- That teams with promotable prospects are unfairly punished for trying them out in ways that real NHL teams are not
The proposal that emerged was;
A. Eliminate the waiver wire and IR rules.
B. Create a true 'Farm team' system , where prospects can be promoted to and from the team without cost in waiver picks of in placing players on the wire. (Players displaced by prospect promotion would now be listed under 'Farm Team' instead of IR or waivers)
C. Maintain current rules regarding number of players protected at WDs, ensuring that excess talent would still be made available at WDs.
The benefits of this proposal are projected to be;
- End the practice of 'drafting to cut', where a team with a promotable prospect drafts a player at that position with no intention of ever playing them but purely so they can be placed on waivers.
- Stop the ongoing madness of waiver wire rules, tracking, multiple bids, etc., and simplify our rulebook substantially.
- Improved utility of prospects.
- More accurate representation of how NHL prospects are used.
There was a great deal of verbal support for this measure, and I'd like to think it borders on unanimity. PLEASE put your comments and suggestions below so we can debate this properly long before we have to consider viting on it.
Thanks,
Cameron
